A vision is a mental imagery tool to help guide the ideal direction of one’s life. Creating a vision helps us generate possibilities through our imagination. It is a focus on direction, with an emphasis on where one wants to be, or sees themself in the future.
Creating a vision with a client allows you to set a solid foundation and focus for the coaching relationship. Stating their vision gives the client a way to express an abstract direction of focus and helps you, the coach, see the end goal through their eyes.
A vision should aim to answer the following questions:
- Where do you see yourself in “X” amount of time?
- What does the healthiest version of you look like? What will you gain by making changes to be the healthiest version of yourself?
- What impact do you want to accomplish?
How to develop a vision with a client:
To begin creating a vision, we first need to identify our values. Every person is unique. We come from different backgrounds, experiences, and all have a different story to tell. These perspectives play a huge role in peoples’ values and what each value means to that person. Once the client has identified their values, explore what each value means to them. While two people may share a value of health, the word “health” can have different connotations for each person. Lastly, once their values have been identified and defined, they can develop a description of their ideal life that incorporates these values. This description is the vision! Developing a clear vision provides a stable foundation for setting and building tiny steps with your client in order to help them reach their goals.
